Expected GST Council Meeting This Month
GST Council meeting update: Sources indicate that a Goods and Services Tax Council meeting will be held later this month to tackle the ongoing issue of establishing appellate tribunals. Although the exact date has not been determined, it is expected to take place around February 18. The Council typically holds a meeting after the release of the Union Budget.
The main agenda of the upcoming Goods and Services Tax Council meeting will be the establishment of appellate tribunals. Additionally, the Council is expected to address the report on online gaming submitted by a Group of Ministers
“Setting up appellate tribunals for GST is a key priority given the huge number of pending cases. It will be rolled out at the earliest,” said another source.
GST Council's Previous Meeting and Unresolved Matters
The last meeting of the Goods and Services Tax Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, took place on December 17 after a six-month hiatus.
During the meeting, the Council clarified tax rates for various items, however, crucial reports on the establishment of appellate tribunals, online gaming, horse racing, casinos, and the taxation of tobacco and gutkha companies were not addressed. This was due to the limited time available, as cited by several state finance ministers, resulting in an early conclusion of the meeting.
